The local canal becomes the feature of this heavily glazed house.

The clients, a family with one child, were slightly unusual in that they were not entirely sure what they wanted when they engaged us, beyond creating a family home that also retained a child-free entertaining space. This gave us the opportunity to work particularly collaboratively with them to develop a vision for their home.

The house was configured as two flats and needed a total internal reimagining, but it also had some existing features that we felt could be maximised, including large window openings and a direct view over a canal to one side, as well as an unusually large garden for the area.

A restrained palette of glass and reclaimed brick to emphasise the striking shapes created by the building’s different planes and levels that were enhanced by the possibilities of the end of terrace plot. Clean large internal entertaining spaces and working with the client to incorporate their eclectic tastes into the interior design.

The simple white kitchen units and worktop allowed the focus to be on the bold, handmade encaustic floor tiles, alongside brass fittings and other fun trims such as pink light sockets. Externally, timber sash windows were restored back to their original Victorian black colour, with reclaimed brick and black aluminium frames for the new areas.

“Crafted have completely transformed our property into something we could not have imagined.

We were unsure of what to do with the house, we only knew it had potential. In our brief we asked for light and space for our growing family and we've ended up with a layout we never thought possible.

Crafted captured exactly what we asked for and so much more, maximising the space to create a well-thought out and practical layout. We started our journey wanting a pretty run-of-the-mill and unexciting extension, but what we now have is something architecturally significant that we're thrilled with.”
