Complex geometry creates a unique roof and maximises space for the homeowners.

  • The project was commissioned by a young professional couple whose growing needs had begun to outstrip the confines of their existing house. Rather than relocate, they sought to unlock the potential of the roof space, asking for a roof extension that would maximise usable space while sitting comfortably within the tight urban fabric of the terrace. Their brief called for a solution that was both generous and intelligent: one that could deliver light, volume, and flexibility.

The architectural response was a roof extension shaped by a hyperbolic paraboloid geometry, using form as a spatial and regulatory tool. This doubly curved roof allowed the volume to expand where space was most valuable while tapering sensitively at boundaries, negotiating overlooking constraints and planning limits with precision. Internally, the geometry creates moments of unexpected height and diagonal views, transforming spaces into usable, characterful areas rather than wasted space.

Material choices reinforce the clarity of the intervention. The extension is clad in standing-seam zinc, its crisp lines accentuating the folded geometry of the roof while offering durability and weather resistance in an exposed position. Carefully positioned rooflights and dormer openings pull daylight deep into the plan. The restrained palette ensures the extension reads as a contemporary addition.

Inside, bespoke joinery and built-in storage are integrated directly into the architecture, maximising efficiency and reducing visual clutter. Sloping walls are absorbed into shelving, seating, and display elements, turning challenging geometries into spatial advantages. The result is a compact but generous extension that feels both crafted and effortless: a precise architectural intervention that transforms the home by making every cubic metre work harder for its occupants.

“Crafted were amazing throughout. Very responsive and creative in their design proposals.

Crafted were our architect for an upwards extension of a Victorian terrace house that included adding two bedrooms and a bathroom. They came with excellent alternatives for a design when we were limited by planning constraints. They then project managed throughout the 8 month build being an invaluable source of advice for us and of quality control of the builders. We firmly believe the project turned out so well because of them and we would recommend them to anyone.”
