The local scenic view drives the form and design of an eco friendly house.

  • The developer wanted to build a contemporary, energy efficient building with minimal disruption during construction because of the close proximity to neighbours and relatively challenging access. They also wanted to maximise views of the rural landscape.

The location was a narrow, overgrown site that had formerly been occupied by a garage. The aim was to fit a house discreetly on to the site by excavating the ground enabling a 2 storey house to be concealed within the landscape.

To make the most of the views of the landscape, and the fact that the ground floor was partially sunken into the ground, we chose an upside down layout for this house, with an open plan living space on the first floor with glazing on three sides as well as a rooflight. Wood was used extensively for the building and the external landscaping to nestle the building into its natural surroundings.
