Transforming a dark Victorian house into a bright and functional family space.

  • When our client purchased this Victorian property, it had been used as a bedsit, with up to ten people occupying its divided rooms. The challenge? To reimagine the space as a cohesive and comfortable family home, while making every penny of the budget count.

With a side and rear extension requiring extensive steelwork, we turned a structural necessity into a design feature - celebrating the exposed steel as a contemporary centerpiece for the new entertaining space. This striking feature allowed for a more restrained palette of materials elsewhere, ensuring the home retained its original period charm.

To keep costs under control, we carefully selected materials and found creative ways to maximise value: reusing existing brickwork, designing the kitchen layout to accommodate standard units and worktops, opting for large format birch floor sheets and standard glazing components all without compromising on style.

The expansive glazing floods the north facing kitchen and dining area with natural light, creating a home that feels both timeless and refreshingly modern.

“I am forever grateful for such a striking kitchen that brings me daily joy and never fails to impress guests.

I had a relatively tight budget, but Crafted Architecture and Planning understood my priorities and delivered a design that was so beyond my expectations.
